There's a bear in there...

Mike: Why did we have to come to a country with bears? I hate having to hang our food in a tree each night.

Zan: Do you think we have to hang our tea?

Mike: Of course! What if the bear wants to make a cup of tea?

Mike and Zan: Sorry we haven't posted in a while. We are 50 miles into our hike and just had our first town stop in Hiawassee. We will try to do a more complete post soon.

Do you guys have a cell phone number where you can be reached to make sure the bears/rednecks/whatever/ haven't taken you in?

The So. Calif connection...

Inquiring minds want to know! You have a reality show in the making you know!

In answer to your various queries and comments:

Ducky: No mike hasn't heard from his brother yet :-( As far as bears climbing trees, Lesson # 8: Bear bags must be hung 10 feet from the ground and four feet from the trunk of a tree. We have been told to ask ourselves "could a dumb bear reach it?" We now just have to figure out what the heck a foot is.

Will: Apparently the bears in North Carolina and Georgia don't hibernate. It is not cold enough. Could have fooled us!! But if you are feeling brave and a bear steals your food you can chase it and you 'should' get your food back, ideally with all limbs intact.

Imogen: Yeah we are talking in miles. We lasted a day before we got too confused trying to convert everything. We are now 106.6 mile into the track. 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometres. So we have done about 171.6 kilometres, which is about 5% of the trail.

Wendy: All of the above. Some days you lie in bed dreading getting because it is so cold and windy then you trudge along all day until you see a glowing red sunset and everything seems alright.

Bel: Yeah so far so good. it is now 106.6 miles and 5% in. The next installment is arriving in the next hour. Some photos are coming but having usb problems at the moment.

Cat: It is good to hear that we havent been forgotten. We will try to post when we get to towns about every two weeks or so.

David in Irvine: yeah we do. Bob K has it. If you ring and a bear/redneck/whatever answers, just ask for mike.

Fil: The chook is doing well although at the moment he is having a rather problematic identity crisis. He thinks he is a duck. We have named him 'Chuck chook' to humour him. And no chuck doesn't go in the tree, he has vertigo. As for bears liking tea white with one, unfortunately we are yet to find out. We only have green tea, but being an American bear, I'm sure he'd take sugar.

Barra: Are you off your medication again?

Karlos: Don't worry about holding down the fort for me. With all the different wildlife in this country, I may not be coming back...
