Hanover, New Hampshire

You know you are a thru-hiker when... You measure your weeks in Miles per day.

That bring us up to date. We are currently in Hanover, New Hampshire and have 440 miles and 2 states left to walk. We have the White Mountains and the 100 Mile Wilderness to look forward to.

Since we know that some of you have bets running as to how far we will get on this trip we would like to propose our own challenge for you all. See if you can guess our finishing date and time (to the nearest minute).

To help you in your guess:

1) We currently have 440 miles to go.
2) We plan to average around 15 miles a day, however there are sections where we are told we may only be able to manage a mile every 2 1/2 hours and other sections where we may be able to average 20 miles a day.
3) Today's date is the 4th of August.
4) We are currently planning to finish around the first half of September.
5) On the day of our summit it will be a 5 mile walk to the top. We climb around 4000 feet over those 5 miles. You can do the conversions yourself.

The Rules:

1) No parents guessing (or helping others guess).
2) Post your guess in the comments section of this blog (so we can find it easily) with your name, a finish date and time.
3) No guesses after the 17th of August.
4) For those of you with itineraries, throw them in the bin. They no longer mean anything.

The Winner:

1) Will be the guess closest to the time we touch the sign on the Summit of Mt Katahdin (US Eastern Standard Time).
2) Must reside in one of the countries on Planet Earth.
3) Must be older than 3 months.
4) Will receive an autographed postcard from Baxter State Park written on the summit of Katahdin.
5) Must know what Mt Katahdin is.
6) Will be invited to join us for drinks, country permitting. We will be in Europe during October, New England and New York for the latter half of September (So foreign nationals feel free to enter) and Australia after then.

Good luck and look foreword to seeing your guesses.

G'day roZanny, It's only taken me this long to navigate the internet to find your blog...I won't dare to guess when you will finish. But it looks like I've hit it at a good time, and can wish you a very happy birthday- this is one you won't forget. (What cocktails can you shake up on the trail?)
I've been kept in the pic by your Mom's annotated map which is a work of art in progress - almost as much effort as your walk!
So impressed with your progress- we did 80ish K in Tassie - and I LOVED it and felt bereft when we walked out off the forest.
Enjoy the rest of the walk, Sandy Lang et al

I have had a think about my early guess before. It appears, I have not checked the calander for a while. It's tough being a dog... As you can see I was a little of the mark. After barking to some of my other doggy mates in the hood, I will have to rethink the whole guess. BUT I WILL BE BACK WITH A NEW GUESS, DON'T WORRY HUMANS, I WILL BE BACK WITH A BETTER ESTIMATE.

Anyway, it is time to shake rattle and roll over to the tree. it's been cold out in the yard today....

All the best hikers.... Hot tip #76. the end is comming....

Dudes!
Well done on getting this far yay...

My 'calculation' (note the word guess was not used) for our entrepid explorers eta (appologies for any inaccuracies in spelling...i had Mr Buchan and Miss Marks for English...Mike would understand) is.....

28th Septmber, 2006, 11:43am.

Obviously Mike does not want to be outdone by his travelling companions by being the only member of the expoloration party to not celebrate his birthday 'on the trail'. With that in mind, i have been reliably informed that he has been slowing the whole expedition down by frequent and extended refreshment breaks at the pubs/bars/taverns/inns/watering holes that i imagine are scattered every hundred metres or so along the track (does anyone else think that or is it just me).

Anyway, i think i have said just about all i need, bellated wishes to Zan, and hold on there tink!

Hi Hikers
My calculations and trying to second guess how much you two will "manage" the finishing sprint by has led me to guesstimate that you will top off on 8th September 2006 at 12.00 (midday)

Zan would like to thank those folk who so kindly sent her a message wishing her all the best on her birthday.

The hikers are deep in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and are looking forward to entering their last state, Maine, in a few days. They say that the view from the top of Mt Washington (6288 ft)was "awesome".
